Temple Sowerby,
the 'Queen of Westmorland Villages'

just 15 minutes from Lake Ullswater,
one of England’s most beautiful lakes

Temple Sowerby was known as the 'neatest and best built village in the county' and the 'Queen of Westmorland Villages' and even today, its graceful 18th & 19th century buildings create a special atmosphere, reflecting the past gentility and affluence of the village with Temple Sowerby House being one of it's most elegant buildings.

The House was formerly the principal residence within the village, being built by the Atkinson family, wealthy local yeoman farmers and owners of sugar plantations in the West Indies. The core of the house dates from the 16th century and was originally a farmhouse, with the elegant Georgian front wing being added in the early 19th century using, we understand, designs drawn up by Robert Adam.

There are now 12 en-suite, individually styled bedrooms and many have views either over the gardens or towards Cross Fell, the highest peak in the Pennines, which dominates the skyline to the North.

Comfortable reception rooms, open fires and imaginative menus – now awarded an AA Two Rosette Dining Award - combine with the peaceful garden setting, to create the uniquely relaxing ambience that is Temple Sowerby House.

The traditional walled gardens stretch to around 2 acres in all and include a croquet lawn and an old greenhouse, home to an even older peach tree, which still produces fruit in late summer.

The Terrace makes an idyllic spot for afternoon tea or pre-dinner drinks during the summer months. The à la carte dinner menu features local and seasonal produce including a selection of herbs, fruits and vegetables from the garden and is complimented by a personally compiled and interesting wine list.

With so much to do within easy reach, Temple Sowerby is an ideal base for touring this stunning region.
